‘Bright talent’: Matheus Cunha admits he really ‘wanted’ to play with £6m Chelsea player at Wolves

Wolves striker Matheus Cunha has now revealed that he wanted to play with one starlet who is about to join Chelsea.

The 2023/24 season was an encouraging one for Wolves, who despite concerns away from the pitch, progressed significantly under Gary O’Neil.

The Englishman was able to get the best out of several players who failed to make an impact when Julen Lopetegui was in charge, one of which being Matheus Cunha.

Ending the campaign on 22 goal contributions, the Brazilian was revitalised thanks to O’Neil although, there is one wish that Cunha hoped would come true at Molineux.

Matheus Cunha admits he wanted to play with Chelsea target Pedro Lima at Wolves

Wolves aren’t the only club to make early moves in the transfer window, after acquiring Rodrigo Gomes from Braga, as Chelsea home in on the capture of Pedro Lima.

Fabrizio Romano detailed that the Blues have agreed to sign the Brazilian starlet in a deal worth £6m, with Cunha now sharing his verdict on the teenager’s move.

In an interview with Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, the Wolves man admitted that he wanted Wolves to sign Lima, adding his understanding that the Old Gold had interest in the right-back.

“Pedro Lima is a talent, he has a bright future. He is from Paraiba who comes to Recife and has a very similar story to me. I wish him the best

“I wanted him to be playing with me because I think Wolves were also interested. But well, he made his decision, Chelsea is a great club and I hope he plays and I hope to face him often.”

Cunha went on to share that he hopes to exchange shirts in the future with the 17-year-old in the Premier League.

“We can talk a little on the field, try to change the shirt, but of course, wishing him all the best, he is a boy who deserves it, who fought for it and thank God it started. May it be a bright future for him, I’ll be rooting for him.”

Cunha talking about transfers elsewhere will please Wolves

Leading into the summer, Cunha was linked to Manchester United however, the striker reinforced that his focus is at Molineux.

After his dazzling form at Wolves last term, it will be a relief to O’Neil that the only talk of transfers coming from the forward is regarding those happening elsewhere in the league.

The 25-year-old will have to be patient to play against Lima, who is set to first join Chelsea’s partner club Strasbourg, with an eye sure to be kept on his development.
