Crystal Palace No.26 Chris Richards involved in rare moment during historic USA clash

Crystal Palace No.26 Chris Richards was involved in a rare moment as the United States clashed with Brazil.

The £8.5m defender started against the South Americans, in what was the final warmup match before the Copa America begins.

Chris Richards helped the USA secure an impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil, and there was one moment in the 51st minute which saw the Crystal Palace man make a piece of history…

Chris Richards now involved in unique moment

The 24-year-old has never experienced something like this, nor have many other players, if any at all.

After Richards poked the ball away from Real Madrid No.11 Rodrygo as he raced through on goal, the United States international was incorrectly booked by Said Martínez.

However – after a VAR check took place to determine whether it should have instead been a red card – the Honduran actually rescinded the yellow card, something that does not usually occur.

VAR does not normally overturn yellow cards in the Premier League or any other competition for that matter – unless there is a wrongly awarded booking for a dive inside the box, denying a potential penalty.

After Martinez rescinded the yellow card, Richards managed to end the game without actually picking up a genuine booking – which is very impressive considering he was up against the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo for 90 minutes.

Crystal Palace No.26 impresses

Not only did Richards manage to avoid a caution against some of Europe’s best attacking players, but he delivered a very composed display throughout.

As shown by SofaScore, the man from Alabama made two clearances and two interceptions against Brazil, while also completing 89% of his passes.

Richards enjoyed a strong end to the 2023/24 campaign under Oliver Glasner, scoring Crystal Palace’s first goal of the Austrian’s reign, before also shining in emphatic wins against Manchester United, where he assisted Jean-Philippe Mateta’s powerful strike, and Aston Villa.

At the age of just 24, the American is developing excellently for both club and country – for just £8.5m, his arrival back in July 2022 is starting to look like yet another bit of brilliance from Dougie Freedman.
