'Move is now imminent': Free agent set to become first summer signing at Sheffield Wednesday - journalist

The arrival of a free agent at Sheffield Wednesday is now ‘imminent’.

Sheffield Wednesday are poised to complete their first summer signing, with Danny Rohl poised to get his first permanent signing over the line.

Rohl guided the Owls to Championship safety last season, then being rewarded with a new three-year contract to keep him at Hillsborough until 2027.

Since, Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a number of potential signings with the Owls likely to scour the free agent market.

Contracts officially come to end on June 30th, with the summer transfer window now officially open too, meaning that teams can really start to get summer transfers over the line.

Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a deal for Yan Valery at Angers, whilst Sheffield United full-back Max Lowe looks set to sign on a free transfer when his Blades contract expires this summer.

But it’s free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer who looks set to become the first signing of the summer at Sheffield Wednesday.

Ben Hamer signing at Sheffield Wednesday now ‘imminent’

Hamer, 36, is a free agent after being let go by Watford at the end of last season.

He was then tipped to join Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer, prompting news that Cameron Dawson is set to leave the club as a free agent this summer.

Hamer, who previously played under Owls assistant coach Chris Powell at Charlton Athletic, looks set to play as no.2 next season, with Sheffield Wednesday keen to re-sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton.

Posting on X, journalist Joe Crann revealed that Hamer’s ‘move is now imminent’, with the Englishman set to become Sheffield Wednesday’s first signing of the summer.

Chris Powell could repeat Ben Hamer trick at Sheffield Wednesday

Powell is an experienced coach in football, and someone who likely boasts a long and varied contacts list having worked with the likes of England, Tottenham Hotspur, and more.

Powell spoke highly of Hamer during their time at Charlton Athletic where they won promotion from League One in 2012.

It may be safe to assume that Powell gave Rohl a good reference of Hamer and that’s something we might see more of this summer.

Having Powell in place may mean that Sheffield Wednesday have an in with certain clubs and certain players, and after the success of last season, Powell will surely recommend Sheffield Wednesday to any interested player.

Hamer’s arrival also looks set to kick-start a busy summer transfer window for the Owls, who appear to be wasting no time in readying themselves for the 2024/25 campaign.
