Prince William looked 'competent' at D-Day commemorations despite shock at family health scares

A royal historian has weighed on how Prince William is faring amid the ill health of his wife and father, and the absence of his brother and sister-in-law.

As we enter the second half of the year, the royal family is looking forward to this weekend’s Trooping the Colour celebrations – an annual commemorative parade celebrating the birth of the sovereign. And as we approach the halfway point of the year it’s fair to say that 2024 has been one to forget for The Firm thus far. With two major health scares and relations between those in London and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seemingly worsening, positive news has been a scarce commodity in Buckingham Palace recently. Given that King Charles and Kate Middleton have both undergone treatment related to cancer, and the Princess and Princess of Wales now permanently reside in California, the pressure has been on the future King, Prince William – and one royal historian believes he has fared rather well.

Prince William was ’emotionally unprepared’ for cancer news

Evaluating how the past few months have been for William, royal historian Gareth Russell told US Weekly how he believes the Duke of Sussex was taken aback by the doubleheader of bad health news the royals revealed earlier this year.

“Maybe he wasn’t emotionally prepared for it,” Russell told the hosts. “His father, yes is elderly, but his father was famously quite healthy and lives well, eats well, and according to his wife, Queen Camilla, just never stops walking.”

“I think for Prince William, there is a lot (going on), the D-Day commemorations are huge.”

William made headlines last week when he appeared at commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day without his brother, reflecting the heightened importance of the heir to the throne’s role now that Harry is rarely in attendance at such events.

Russell had faith in William’s D-Day appearance

Despite being understandably shocked by the cancer news, William has proceeded to present himself impressively well on the public stage – according to Russell.

In a clip filmed shortly before William’s D-Day appearance, Russell explained the importance of the occasion: “It’s a huge event, it’s a huge commemoration, there will be many eyes on him… it should be something he’s prepared to do.”

Confirming whether or not he thought William was up to the task when it came to the D-Day event, Russell said: “I think so far he has shown himself to be more than competent and capable in doing so.

“Certainly when it comes to something of the emotional significance of the D-Day commemorations… you do want someone who is prepared and capable”, he added.

With a great deal of certainty surrounding Kate’s potential presence at the event, William may once again be in the spotlight as royalists come together to watch the Trooping the Colour spectacle this weekend.
