Arsenal could now deliver 'significant blow' to Man Utd deal as enquiry made for £50m star

Arsenal are in the market for a midfielder this summer, and have now made an enquiry for a Premier League star.

Thomas Partey could leave amid interest from Saudi Arabia, and Mikel Arteta wants to add a midfielder to his ranks who could help get the best out of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad appears to be his top target, but it remains questionable if the Spaniard wants to leave his boyhood club.

It was recently reported that Everton midfielder Amadou Onana was no longer being considered due to his midfield profile. However, it now appears that Arsenal have made an enquiry for him.

Arsenal make enquiry for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana

Everton journalist Joe Thomas has now revealed that Arsenal have enquired over Onana, who is valued at around £50m.

“Arsenal have enquired about the availability of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana,” he posted on X.

With Everton needing to sell to fulfil profit and sustainability regulations, Onana could be a candidate to leave, and with Manchester United interested in Jarrad Branthwaite, Arsenal’s interest in the midfielder could scupper any deal to take him to Old Trafford.

“Arsenal interest in Onana has potential to be significant blow to Man Utd’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite. A sale before end of June would be helpful to Everton’s PSR position. If that was to be Onana, it would help Everton to, at the least, fight to gain true value for the CB,” he added.

It is tough to judge whether Onana is the right midfielder for Arsenal. Whilst he would add more physicality to the middle of the park, the presence of Rice in the middle means that this is not a priority when it comes to a new signing.

Arsenal need a midfielder who can progress the ball well to allow Rice to play higher up the pitch. Onana has not excelled in this area at Everton, but playing in a team which does not dominate the ball perhaps means that he may not have been able to showcase his true ability under Sean Dyche.

At 22, Onana is still young and has the potential to improve, but questions may still remain over whether he is the right player for Arsenal to target in this window.
