Report: Newcastle hit stumbling block in race for big-money signing who Eddie Howe is a big admirer of

Newcastle United are being priced out of a move for one of their summer targets after admiring the player for some time now.

The Toon have made a bright start to the summer transfer window with the addition of Lloyd Kelly on a free following his departure from Bournemouth in recent weeks.

Having worked together during their time on the south coast, Eddie Howe has reunited with an old player of his on Tyneside.

Newcastle‘s 2023/24 campaign showed their issues when it came to squad depth with injury riddling this side throughout the season.

However, the Magpies are looking to bolster their squad going into the new term despite having narrowly missed out on European football.

But it seems one of their targets for the coming months may prove just a stretch too far.

Newcastle being priced out of move for £65m summer target

With one target already in the bag for Newcastle this summer, focus will now be shifting elsewhere with work to be done in bolstering the quality of Howe’s squad.

Although Alexander Isak has proven himself to be one of the top strikers in the Premier League, his injury record is far from encouraging.

And his backup in Callum Wilson has proven even less reliable when it comes to keeping himself fit.

One potential option this summer which has presented itself to Newcastle this summer is that of Dominic Solanke.

A report from The Chronicle has highlighted Newcastle’s interest in the Bournemouth striker, however, Lee Ryder has also explained the difficulties of getting a deal over the line.

Newcastle are said to have made enquiries for Solanke over the last two transfers windows now.

But the striker has a £65m release clause which Bournemouth would require as they look to keep the striker who scored 21 times in the Premier League alone last season.

That release clause is only said to apply to certain clubs, though, and Newcastle would have to exceed that for the Cherries to consider selling Solanke.

Newcastle must focus on other targets this summer

Solanke did impress last season with a solid return of over 20 goals in the league, but Newcastle simply cannot spend that type of money on a player who would not be starting ahead of Isak.

Of course, Newcastle need to bolster their squad depth and Solanke would obviously do that, but that sort of money could surely be spent elsewhere.

It is believed Michael Olise is a player of significant interest at Newcastle and at that sort of price range, perhaps Newcastle would get more value out of the Crystal Palace forward.

Competition for the Frenchman is set to be fierce and Newcastle would have to work their magic to get a deal over the line, however, he would be more likely to feature in the starting XI than Solanke.
