'Not true': Keith Downie now says Newcastle won't be signing 'fantastic' Premier League winner this summer

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has dismissed Newcastle United’s rumoured interest in signing a Premier League title winner.

The Magpies are set for a busy summer of transfers, with Eddie Howe already moving to sign AFC Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as a free agent, with the window only opening officially this Friday.

With Dominic Solanke also believed to be a target for Newcastle, it’s clear that the St. James’ Park side have big ambitions having missed out on Europe this season via Manchester United’s FA Cup win last month.

Yet one former Premier League champion is now seemingly not joining Newcastle.

Newcastle’s interest in Asmir Begovic dismissed after reports

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Downie confirmed that Newcastle will not be moving for Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, with the journalist commenting on the rumour: “Not true guys. No Begovic to Newcastle.”

With Newcastle moving closer to confirming the signing of James Trafford, it makes sense why a deal for Begovic is now out of the window, even with the 36-year-old an experienced shot-stopper in the Premier League.

Once lauded as ‘fantastic’ by Jose Mourinho, Begovic would have been a useful pickup for Newcastle in their bid to overhaul their goalkeeping options this summer.

Yet with a deal for Trafford close and the Toon not competing in Europe next season, dropping interest in Begovic could end up being a good decision for Newcastle, who have more pressing matters elsewhere in the squad.

Magpies will have no regrets in moving on from Begovic

Begovic is a player who commands a lot of respect from Premier League supporters having been a stalwart in the division for some ten years across spells with Stoke City, Chelsea and Bournemouth.

Yet for Newcastle, there will be no regrets in moving on from signing the veteran goalkeeper, with the impending arrival of Trafford something that has seemingly played in rumoured interest in Begovic.

Indeed, the former Bosnia international would have be good competition had the deal for Trafford not materialised, and Newcastle can now start focusing on other targets as well as potential outgoings this window.
