'There’s opportunism': Newcastle now believe 'outstanding' £20m player will soon sign - journalist

Newcastle United are reportedly growing in confidence that a £20m-rated player will soon be moving to St. James’ Park.

The Magpies have been one of the early trend setters in the summer transfer market, having already completed and announced the signing of AFC Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as a free agent.

With links also emerging in recent days surrounding the likes of FC Barcelona winger Ferran Torres, Newcastle could be set for one of their biggest windows in some years if they can navigate through FFP and PSR restrictions.

And the Toon could soon be set to announce another new signing.

James Trafford ‘quite close’ to joining Newcastle in £20m deal

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, with a deal expected to cost as much as £20m for the England youth international.

Hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Anthony Gordon, the transfer of Trafford to Newcastle is now seemingly a case of ‘when’ it will be confirmed rather than ‘if’, with progress heading in the right direction.

Jacobs said about Burnley’s outgoings: “There’s opportunism not just because Burnley have gone down but because they have lost their manager, Vincent Kompany. There would be a lot of interest there in moving to Fulham [for Jacob Bruun Larsen].

“The only downside there is that according to my information, James Trafford to Newcastle is getting quite close to being done. Burnley are pushing for a fee of £20m, and Burnley will be in a stronger position in the market.”

Magpies have gone about signing Trafford in expert fashion

The transfer window only opened this Friday, yet Newcastle are already showing that they want to be one of the most ambitious sides in the market with the signing of Kelly and the impending arrival of Trafford.

Whilst the 21-year-old goalkeeper has his critics this season, Trafford has shown that in the right environment that he can be an outstanding shot-stopper in the Premier League.

And under a manager like Eddie Howe with a club on the rise like Newcastle, Trafford could have the perfect new home at this stage in his career, where fans should be excited about this signing.
