'Made contact': PL club have now made their first move to sign £30m Newcastle target - Romano

Newcastle United could look to the Championship in their search for a winger, but face a lot of competition.

It is well documented that the Magpies are eager to sign a winger this summer, with Toon officials recently making a move to bring in Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

That deal will be massively difficult given the amount of major clubs that are eyeing up the 22-year-old, which is why Newcastle United have alternatives.

One of those is Chelsea’s Noni Madueke, while Nico Williams of Athletic Bilbao is also on the Magpies’ radar.

And the same goes for Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville, who could be on his way out of Elland Road after they missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

It has been reported that Summerville could be available for around £30million, and he is a player who Toon officials have been watching.

However, they are not the only Premier League club that wants to give the 22-year-old another chance in the top flight.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Crysencio Summerville’s future

Summerville is attracting a lot of interest from Premier League clubs, one of which have now made their first move to try and do a deal with Leeds United.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Brighton And Hove Albion have initiated contact with the Yorkshire club about possibly signing the Dutch attacker.

He wrote on X: “Understand Brighton have made contact to start talks over Crysencio Summerville deal. Not an easy one with many clubs keen but #BHAFC have started initial talks to explore this possibility. Liverpool and Chelsea have been monitoring him in recent months, still open race.”

Newcastle United transfer feels unlikely

Brighton have just appointed a new manager, and now they are trying to make a major signing.

The Seagulls have signalled their intent to bring in Summerville, who was simply breathtaking in the Championship last season. He made 49 appearances in all competitions during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists.

31 goal contributions is a remarkable tally, and it was no surprise to see him named as Championship Player of the Season.

That is why Premier League clubs are eyeing him, one of which is Newcastle.

However, it would be a surprise if Summerville ended up at St James’ Park. There is a lot of competition for his signature, with Romano noting that Liverpool and Chelsea are also keen.

That could lead to a bidding war, which is something that Newcastle will aim to avoid. On top of that, Summerville played his best football on the left wing for Leeds last season. In contrast, the Magpies are looking for someone who can operate down the right.

Of course, he is capable of playing on both flanks, while Anthony Gordon could also move over to the right. However, both wingers would rather be on the left wing, which is why it would be a surprise to see him end up on Tyneside.
