'Need to sell': Newcastle handed transfer boost with target unlikely to sign a new contract - journalist

Newcastle United have have received some positive news in their search for a striker.

Eddie Howe is looking to add another goalscorer to his squad ahead of the 2024/25 season, while there are also rumours that Callum Wilson could leave the club.

It has been reported that he is open to a fresh start elsewhere and that a move away from Newcastle United is likely.

If the 32-year-old does depart, the Magpies will be desperate to bring in a replacement, otherwise Alexander Isak will be the club’s only out-and-out striker.

Newcastle United handed Dominic Calvert-Lewin boost

One player linked with replacing Wilson at St James’ Park is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He is viewed as a player who can get better under Eddie Howe, while there is the added bonus of him going into the final year of his Everton contract.

However, it was recently reported that the Toffees have opened discussions with Calvert-Lewin about signing an extension, and a new deal would almost certainly rule out a move to the North East.

However, HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys that the 27-year-old is currently unlikely to sign a new contract at Goodison Park.

“Everton are looking for a replacement for Calvert-Lewin,” he said.

“They have looked at Armando Broja on loan and Tammy Abraham. They haven’t got any money to spend, and the takeover, if it happens, won’t be done until after August.

“Calvert-Lewin has got a year left on his contract. If he isn’t going to sign an extension then Everton need to sell.

“At the minute, it is not looking likely that he will sign a contract extension.”

Newcastle more likely to sign Calvert-Lewin than Tammy Abraham

If Calvert-Lewin is not interested in signing a new contract then Everton will need to sell. Given their financial situation, it is incredibly unlikely that they let his contract run down and lose him on a free transfer next summer.

That could give Newcastle an opportunity, but another candidate to arrive on Tyneside is Tammy Abraham.

He looks set to return to England, with Roma willing to accept a cut price fee for the 26-year-old. Newcastle have been made aware of his availability, and there is a feeling amongst fans that he would be a good addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

However, Bailey believes that, out of Calvert-Lewin and Abraham, it is the former that is more likely to sign for Newcastle this summer.

“I suspect that Calvert-Lewin is higher on Eddie Howe’s list than Tammy Abraham.

“Abraham would be the safer choice, but Calvert-Lewin probably has a higher ceiling. We know Eddie Howe likes him, and if I was betting between the two I would go with Calvert-Lewin [to join Newcastle].

“He’s much more likely to end up on Tyneside.”
