'If he's mentioned': League One manager shuts down talk of Sheffield Wednesday's interest in 'excellent' gem

A League One manager has shut down rumours of Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in one of his ‘excellent’ players.

Despite keeping seven clean sheets in their last 16 matches of the season, Sheffield Wednesday have prioritised bolstering their defence early on in the transfer window.

The Owls have already snapped up Max Lowe on a free transfer after he was released by Sheffield United, while a deal for Yan Valery is expected to be done before the end of the week.

With either side of the backline looking strengthened, they have since been linked with central defender Cameron Humphreys.

The 25-year-old has spent the last two years with Rotherham United and has been a standout figure in a fairly miserable period, while journalist Alan Biggs hailed him as ‘seriously good’ and ‘excellent’.

Steve Evans is ‘not aware’ of Sheffield Wednesday’s interest

While potentially a rather positive signing for Wednesday, it didn’t take very long for Rotherham to shut down talk of a deal.

Speaking to the Rotherham Advisor, manager Steve Evans said: ““If he’s mentioned with Wednesday then I’m not surprised if he’s mentioned with Thursday and Friday as well.

“Cameron has been really good for me in the three games he’s played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”

The Owls don’t need to pursue Cameron Humphreys

Steve Evans’ comments don’t necessarily mean that Humphreys will stay at the New York Stadium this summer, especially if he wants a quick return to the Championship.

However, Wednesday won’t want to splash the cash on him and could save that money for a more important position.

The Owls’ search for a new centre-back may depend on whether Dominic Iorfa and Di’Shon Bernard sign a new contract, but Humphreys won’t be a priority if they do.

Danny Rohl‘s side should instead look to add players further up the pitch, with both their midfield and attack looking rather bare as we approach pre-season.
