Aston Villa agree eight-figure fee to sell ‘highly-rated’ local wonderkid to Premier League rivals

Aston Villa have agreed to sell one of their best upcoming talents to Premier League rivals Everton for an eight-figure fee.

Talk of departures at Villa has been non-stop throughout June 2024. After the club lost nearly £120 million in 2023, there has been a great deal of concern that they may not meet PSR.

It is believed that Villa will need to raise nearly £60 million before June 30 or the Birmingham outfit risk repercussions.

As a result, the club has gone to many lengths to ensure this is met. Jhon Duran is closing in on a move to Chelsea while Douglas Luiz is in talks to join Juventus.

Villa are also looking to appoint Celtic commercial director Adrian Filby in order to ensure this situation does not happen again.

However, it now seems like Villa will let another player leave the club with Tim Iroegbunam closing in on a move to Everton.

Iroegbunam is a local lad who was born in Great Barr. After progressing through the West Brom academy, Villa signed the midfielder in 2021.

The youngster quickly impressed and made his Premier League debut in February 2022 for the Claret and Blue against Brighton. A season-long loan to QPR followed before he became a squad player under Unai Emery in the last campaign.

The 20-year-old made 15 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign, mainly off the bench as he helped the club qualify for the Champions League.

However, he now looks set to leave Villa. According to Pete O’Rourke on Football Insider, Villa have accepted a £10 million bid for Iroegbunam from Everton.

The article goes on to say that despite the Claret and Blue side highly rating the youngster, concerns over PSR combined with his low game time have resulted in the bid being accepted.

The Birmingham Mail also believes that the two clubs are in advanced talks about the transfer ofIroegbunam

It seems that PSR has finally caught up with Villa. Considering Villa highly-rate Iroegbunam, there are doubts that the club would be willing to let the 20-year-old go if it wasn’t for the financial pressure they are under.

The same could be said for Luiz and Duran who both played a highly-important role in the previous campaign.

Going forward, lessons need to be learned at Villa. All three of the potential departures could have played a crucial role in the starting XI for years to come. However, financial mismanagement means that they are likely to form part of the opposition for the foreseeable future.

With Filby likely to be appointed as part of the backroom staff, hopefully, the commercial director can point the club in the right direction to ensure this does not happen again.
