N.J. man convicted of manslaughter after a second trial

An Essex County man was convicted of aggravated manslaughter this week after prosecutors failed to convince a jury to convict him in a 2016 Christmas-morning shooting, Essex county Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said Tuesday.

Habeeb Robinson, 40, of Newark was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter, weapons offenses and witness tampering in the shooting death of Hassan Q. Cobb-Jones, 32, of Newark.

Cobb-Jones was shot on Christmas morning, 2016 while sitting in a van on the 100 block of Parker Street, authorities said.

A jury in 2019 failed to reach a verdict on the charges in 2019, officials said. Robinson was also guilty of possessing a firearm by a convicted felon in a separate proceeding, according to officials

Robinson faces up to 30 years in prison for the manslaughter charge and additional prison time on the separate weapons conviction.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
