It has sadly been announced that French actress Anouk Aimée has died at 92, with fans paying tribute to the classic screen icon.

When you begin to dive into the history of cinema, you are immediately compelled to traverse deeper and deeper, decade upon decade. But of course, it would be foolish not to expand further and explore world cinema, experiencing other cultures and stars so mesmerizing they all but reach through the screen. For those whose journey has graced them with 1960s movie classics like Federico Fellini’s masterpiece La Dolce Vita and Claude Lelouch’s A Man And A Woman, you will already have been blown away by the ever-magnetic Anouk Aimée, who very unfortunately died recently.

French actress Anouk Aimée has died at 92, family confirms

The much-celebrated French actress Anouk Aimée passed away at 92 on Tuesday, June 18th 2024.

Her daughter, Manuela Papatakis, broke the news on her Instagram, sharing an old black and white photo of her mother alongside the caption: “With my daughter, Galaad, and my granddaughter, Mila, we are immensely saddened to announce the decease of my mother, Anouk Aimée.”

Mourning her departure, “I was at her bedside when she passed away this morning at her home in Paris,” she wrote. “With infinite love.”

Going on to work with directors like the above-mentioned Federico Fellini and Jacques Demy (Lola), Anouk’s career on screen began to flourish as early as the 1940s, as she landed a role in 1946’s The House Under The Sea when she was just 14.

Continuing to earn parts in films like Golden Salamander, she truly entered into the realm of iconic in the 1960s, thanks to La Dolce Vita kicking off the decade. She played Maddalena, whose scenes with the central character Marcello Mastroianni have remained timeless. Three years later, she starred in another of Federico’s most notable works, 8 1/2 (she played Luisa).

She was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for A Man and a Woman, and although she didn’t get it, she did get both a Golden Globe and a BAFTA win for the film.

This helped lead to work on movies like The Appointment, cementing her as a revered international star whose performances cinephiles will be admiring for years and years.

Tributes to the ‘beautiful’ and ‘talented’ Anouk Aimée

Heartbroken by the announcement of Anouk’s passing, fans and well-wishers have been driven to pay tribute.

“So sorry to hear this sad news,” one commented on Anouk’s daughter’s post. “One of the most beautiful and talented actresses of our times. Sending you love and condolences.”

Gutted, a fan reacted by hailing her for “one of the finest performances ever” in 8 1/2. Another similarly wrote on X/Twitter: “She was so enigmatic in Lola.”

More tributes range from praising her as a “wonderful actress” to “a woman with depths within depths,” it couldn’t be more evident that she touched so many audiences through her brilliant work.

“A woman who found a way to immortalize herself on the screen,” one respectfully wrote. May she rest in peace.
