Leeds need to rival Ipswich for 'consistent' Wales midfielder who shares an agent with Karl Darlow - opinion

Plenty of Championship midfielders have caught the eye during 2023-24 but one Cardiff City ace is on the radar of Premier League clubs, and Leeds United have got to throw their hat into the ring.

Leeds could do with another central midfielder this summer. Given the need for centre-backs with Joe Rodon and Liam Cooper leaving, it is unlikely Ethan Ampadu will be moved into the middle of the park.

Archie Gray was incredible from right-back and it will be interesting to see if Daniel Farke moves the teenager into central midfield next season, and it could depend on whether a new right-back is signed.

But midfield depth is required given Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev were largely the only two midfielders available last term, with Ampadu and Gray in defence. Gruev has been linked with Borussia Dortmund.

Leeds should consider Ipswich target Ethan Ampadu knows well

Leeds themselves have a number of young stars that are on the radars of Premier League clubs this summer. But Cardiff have one too and Leeds should consider a move for Wales player Rubin Colwill.

Mirror reporter Darren Witcoop claims on X that Ipswich are among admirers for the “consistent” star who has played alongside the likes of Ampadu, Rodon, Connor Roberts and Dan James for the Welsh.

A player that is renowned for his passing, his technical ability and the fact he is already a young player considered a regular with Wales. He would be a very smart signing in the middle of the park.

Leeds have an advantage in the form of Colwill’s agent

Premier League clubs are keen on Colwill but a step up to the Premier League at this stage might a be a jump too far, straight away. He may need a step in between and Leeds would be the perfect move.

He would inject some freshness and raw talent into a midfield that includes an experienced player in Glen Kamara who is closing in on 30, while Gruev is more of a sitting player that does not bestow huge pace.

Colwill, who shares the same agent as goalkeeper Karl Darlow, would give Leeds something a bit different and the fact he had a hand in seven goals last season shows he can have an impact in the final third.
