Rangers could lose bargaining chip in transfer talks after release clause activated - report

Rangers are closing in on a deal for Connor Barron and Aberdeen fans aren’t happy about it.

The Gers have reportedly won the race to sign the 21-year-old midfielder as his contract ticks down at Pittodrie.

Reports are suggesting that Rangers have struck deals with both Connor Barron and ex-Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly ahead of the new season.

But there are some complications to overcome with regards the deal with Aberdeen due a Connor Barron development fee as part of any transfer.

With the two clubs having to come to an agreement over the amount, Rangers have potentially just lost a crucial bargaining chip when it comes to striking a deal.

Rangers lose Barron bargaining chip

Had Connor Barron agreed to move south of the border, according to the Daily Record Aberdeen would be due around £525k in development fees.

But because the switch to Rangers means the midfielder is staying in the country, the two clubs must agree a fee for the midfielder or the decision will go to an independent tribunal.

It remains unclear how obstructive Aberdeen will be in this regard but any notion that Rangers could have a bargaining chip in Robby McCrorie has just been extinguished.

With the Dons on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, it’s been reported that they were interested in taking McCrorie to Pittodrie.

The Rangers academy goalkeeper is set to leave the club this summer and brother Ross McCrorie successfully made the switch to the Dons three years ago.

But now reports in the Daily Record are claiming that Aberdeen have instead turned their attentions to St Johnstone goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov.

It’s believed the Dons have activated the Bulgarian’s six-figure release clause with the stopper now heading the club’s shortlist to replace Kelle Roos.

Aberdeen turn goalkeeper attentions elsewhere

Interestingly, Ross McCrorie was a bargaining chip for Rangers when the club secured the pre-contract signing of Scott Wright.

The Gers academy defender had been out on loan at Pittodrie and as Rangers looked to bring Wright in early back in January 2021, McCrorie’s permanent transfer fee was reduced.

There will be no such scenario with brother Robby should Aberdeen’s new manager Jimmy Thelin complete a move for Dimitar Mitov.

It means that Rangers may have to negotiate a fee for Connor Barron outright and it’s a scenario which will present a potential headache for the Ibrox board.

A failure to do so will see the case head to tribunal and in such an event it is unclear just how much Rangers will be expected to pay Aberdeen for the player.
