Fabrizio Romano gives update on Weston McKennie to Tottenham and Aston Villa transfer rumours

Tottenham have been rumoured with a switch for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie in the summer transfer window.

Spurs are keen to bolster their midfield ranks over the coming weeks, with Ange Postecoglou continuing to build upon the foundations he has placed.

The Tottenham manager has implemented his style of play during his first season at Hotspur Way, which has brought along plenty of positive results.

However, the early season form wore off as the Premier League progressed, displaying the clear flaws that still exist in the Lilywhites squad.

Tottenham will enter next season in the Europa League, while also being another year wiser to the methods of the head coach.

With the summer transfer window here, there have been plenty of Tottenham transfer rumours floating around.

Weston McKennie transfer latest

Amid all of the transfer rumours surrounding Tottenham, the latest name to appear has been USMNT international Weston McKennie.

The Juventus midfielder has been a mainstay in the team over the most recent Serie A campaign, helping the Bianconeri towards a Champions League return.

Those performances have led to talks over a potential transfer exit, with Aston Villa among those showing interest.

However, with rumours over a potential move to Hotspur Way also around, Fabrizio Romano has looked to clarify the situation.

Taking to social media platform X, the transfer expert said: “Tottenham are not working on deal to sign Weston McKennie.

“Talks between Juventus and Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz, Iling Jr and McKennie swap deal remain ongoing.

“The key point remains exit conditions to be agreed between McKennie and Juve.”

It means that Spurs could be looking elsewhere to add to their midfield ranks over the coming weeks, with McKennie now set to represent the USA in Copa America 2024.

Tottenham midfield transfer targets

So with McKennie ruled out as a current target for Tottenham, there will need to be alternatives that are on their transfer shortlist.

Postecoglou could look to add a more defensive option to his central ranks that will complement the skillset of Pape Matar Sarr.

Brazil and Atalanta star Ederson may be one option, with the 24-year-old showing off his ability to secure the centre of the pitch.

Conor Gallagher is another player who adds steely resistance in the middle but can also bring a certain box-to-box presence to the team.

Whether either of those stars or anyone else on the club’s radar, makes it into the team remains to be seen as the transfer window kickstarts for the summer.
