Report: Sheffield Wednesday player exit now deemed likely following talks with potential new club

A Sheffield Wednesday player looks set to join a League One club this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to have a markedly different first-team squad at the start of next season, compared to what they had at the start of last season.

The Owls are undergoing some pretty drastic changes on the pitch this summer after manager Danny Rohl guided the club to a 20th place finish in the Championship last season.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri formalised a new three-year contract for Rohl, and since, Sheffield Wednesday have been hard at work in the transfer market.

Ben Hamer and Max Lowe have arrived as Rohl’s first two permanent signings at Hillsborough. Elsewhere, the Owls are thoughts to be in talks with Ian Poveda.

Whilst plenty look set to arrive in S6 this summer, many more could also leave, with contracts officially expiring on June 30th.

One of those out of contract is Cameron Dawson; the Sheffield-born goalkeeper was offered a new contract but the arrival of Hamer looked as though it meant Dawson would be moving on.

28-year-old Dawson has since been linked with Bristol Rovers in League One.

Cameron Dawson to Bristol Rovers rumours are true

Dawson lost his place in the Sheffield Wednesday starting XI last season, with Brighton loan man James Beadle displacing the longstanding Wednesday shot-stopper.

Rohl is keen for Beadle to return this summer and now Dawson looks nailed on to leave as a free agent.

An emerging report from The Star says that recent rumours of Dawson being in talks with League One outfit Bristol Rovers are ‘accurate’.

The Star also say that a Bristol Rovers deal for Dawson is ‘likely’ to happen, with Dawson set to reunite with former Owls teammate Jack Hunt at the Memorial Stadium.

Danny Rohl will be desperate for Sheffield Wednesday transfer deal

With Hamer having arrived and Dawson looking set to leave, it leaves just the no.1 spot to fill.

And Rohl will surely be desperate for Beadle to return and have a full season in the Championship, following his impressive loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday last time round.

The 19-year-old showed huge strides in his development during a very small period of time, and it may be that Dawson gave Beadle a lot of pointers and motivation along the way.

For Dawson though, at 28 years old and on the back of a tough season, a move away somewhere where he’ll get more first-team exposure could be ideal for him.

He remains an experienced player and he’s previously shone at League One level, so Bristol Rovers will land a very useful goalkeeper should they seal a deal for Dawson.

A busy summer lies ahead for Sheffield Wednesday. Though it’s a summer with a lot of positive potential changes.
