Aston Villa hold 'positive talks' with target tipped for 'bright future' by David Unsworth

Aston Villa have held ‘positive talks’ with a talented Premier League gem ahead of a potential swoop for the youngster.

Aston Villa are keen to improve their squad ahead of a Champions League campaign next season but know they must first make sales in order to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

Funds are needed ahead of the 30th June PSR deadline and that is why the departures of both Jhon Duran and Douglas Luiz are likely.

However, once this has passed Unai Emery can focus on strengthening his squad ready for next season, with a higher calibre of player sought ready to compete with Europe’s elite.

Despite that, the club are always on the lookout for talented youngsters who have the potential to become stars and that is exactly what they’re looking to do with a move for Everton’s Lewis Dobbin.

Aston Villa in ‘talks’ to sign Everton’s Lewis Dobbin

Villa have talent in wide areas, with Moussa Diaby, Leon Bailey and Morgan Rogers.

With Rogers injured for the end of last season, Diaby and Bailey looked fatigued as they had no choice but to play the bulk of the minutes both domestically and in the Europa Conference League.

Therefore, additions in wide areas are needed and it seems Villa are keen to add an exciting young talent in Dobbin.

That is according to The Athletic’s Aston Villa reporter Jacob Tanswell, who posted on ‘X’: ‘Aston Villa have held positive talks to sign winger Lewis Dobbin from Everton.’

The report included in Tanswell’s post suggests Villa could use Everton’s interest in Tim Iroegbunam to negotiate a transaction either including both players swapping clubs or a fee immediately being paid for both to help with PSR.

At 21, Dobbin is a player who could be moulded by Emery into a top player.

He has played just 20 senior games for Everton but scored his first Premier League goal in a 2-0 win over Chelsea in December.

A pacey right-footed winger who prefers to play on the left, Dobbin impressed whilst on loan at Derby County in the 2022/23 season as he scored five and assisted six in 56 games in all competitions.

Former Everton under-23 coach David Unsworth believes Dobbin will be a ‘top player’ and spoke on the then 16-year-old as he handed him his under-23 debut in 2019.

Unsworth said: “I’ve been champing at the bit to get him involved.

“He’s going to be a top player, there’s absolutely no doubt about that and the great thing tonight was that we had seven subs so it was great to get him involved.

“I was desperate to throw him on and he showed little glimpses of his pace and movement and there is an awful lot to work with there. I think he’s got a very bright future.”

With Bailey and Diaby both preferring to operate on the right, Dobbin would be a good option to compete with Rogers for the wide left berth and adds depth to a position currently lacking.
