Chansiri's spending pattern at Sheffield Wednesday this summer has just become a whole lot clearer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is widely expected to dip into his pockets this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are making positive strides both on and off the pitch so far this summer.

After avoiding relegation, owner Dejphon Chansiri quicky worked on a new deal for Danny Rohl, handing the Owls manager a new three-year extension.

Since, Rohl has made his first two summer signings at the club, and his first two permanent signings as Sheffield Wednesday manager.

A third is now expected too with reports that Angers right-back Yan Valery is set to undergo his Sheffield Wednesday medical on Thursday.

The 25-year-old was recently subject to a £420,000 loan-to-buy bid from Standard Liege which clearly didn’t work for Angers.

Though how much Sheffield Wednesday are paying for Valery, and what the structure of the deal is, remains to be seen.

But it certainly gives us an indication into what Chansiri is ready to spend at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

How much will Sheffield Wednesday spend under Dejphon Chansiri this summer

Amid the uncertainty around Sheffield Wednesday’s budget, it remains clear that Chansiri may have to spend some kind of money in order to keep Rohl content.

And it looks like he’s doing so with a move for Valery. It seems unlikely that Sheffield Wednesday will have to pay much further north than that apparent £420,000 figure, which certainly seems like a ballpark fee for Valery.

Hypothetically, if Sheffield Wednesday spend that amount on one player this summer, it could suggest that Chansiri and Rohl will put up similar fees for a few other players.

Per Transfermarkt, Sheffield Wednesday spent at least £1.3million last summer; £1million on Djeidi Gassama and £300,000 on Pol Valentin.

That was under Xisco Munoz and when there was no proper head of recruitment in place. Now with Rohl in charge and wanting to see ambition, and Kevin Beadell as head of recruitment, spending could be higher this time round, and done with much more research.

Sheffield Wednesday should spend big on one area

Expect the Owls to utilise the free and loan markets heavily this summer. But expect spending in certain key areas.

And perhaps one area that needs more bolstering, and needs more quality than any other, is in attack; especially so with Josh Windass facing an uncertain summer, and Bailey Cadamarteri attracting Premier League interest.

Chansiri was reportedly ready to spend big on a striker in January, and reported bids for Duncan McGuire soon after proved that.

Expect the case to be the same again this summer, though expect the Owls to really do their homework before spending on any one player.

Sheffield Wednesday aren’t in a position to spend big sums on players who may or may not prevail.

Rohl and Chansiri need definite results. But playing under Rohl certainly seems to improve players, so there’s hope that this summer’s business will have long-lasting results for Sheffield Wednesday.
