Report: Max Lowe snubbed Middlesbrough and joined Sheffield Wednesday after one thing happened

Sheffield Wednesday recently announced the signing of Max Lowe on a free transfer.

Max Lowe, 27, has left Sheffield United and will join Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent when his Blades contract officially expires at the end of this month.

Lowe joins names like Marvin Johnson, Gary Madine, and many others in playing for both Steel City clubs, and Lowe will look to end several years of injury woes under Danny Rohl.

In four seasons at Bramall Lane, Lowe made just 53 total appearances owing to injury, spending time out on loan with Nottingham Forest during their 2021/22 promotion-winning campaign.

Despite Lowe’s struggles on the injury front, it appears as though he had a number of suitors in the Championship.

The Star say that Lowe ‘spoke to a handful of rival Championship clubs’ before putting pen-to-paper on what is a two-year deal at Hillsborough.

Middlesbrough were one of the teams in the race to sign Lowe this summer. But he opted to join Sheffield Wednesday instead.

Danny Rohl factor in Max Lowe move to Sheffield Wednesday

Lowe understandably had Championship interest this summer; despite his injury record, he’s proved to be very creative on the left, grabbing nine assists in his 53 outings for Sheffield United.

But Lowe, per The Star, opted to join the Owls after having a conversation with Rohl, snubbing Middlesbrough and several others in the process.

Lowe is only Rohl’s second permanent signing as Sheffield Wednesday manager after the arrival of Ben Hamer on a free transfer beforehand.

The Owls are now expected to complete a third permanent signing of the summer transfer window with Yan Valery set to undergo a medical.

One thing at Sheffield Wednesday cannot be underestimated

It’s been a positive start to the summer transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday. Rohl though will know that there’s still a huge amount of work to be done to the team if they’re to avoid another relegation scrap next time round.

Sheffield Wednesday need to replace the likes of Will Vaulks and possibly Josh Windass and Di’Shon Bernard, who all added quality to the XI last season.

It’ll certainly be tough, but Lowe’s case study suggests that Rohl can be a huge pull factor for Sheffield Wednesday in the transfer market this summer.

Rohl’s presence as a pundit at the Euros may only serve to bolster that idea too, with Rohl having a chance to share his footballing knowledge and likeable presence with everyone.

There’s definitely reason to be optimistic about what this summer has in store for Sheffield Wednesday. But there’s still a lot of obstacles to overcome.
