Why AC Milan are pushing to sign £16m Tottenham star as first summer transfer exit nears

Tottenham are set for wholesale changes over the course of the summer transfer window, with incomings and outgoings expected.

Ange Postecoglou is looking to improve upon a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, which set the foundations for his start to life as Tottenham boss.

A quick start displayed the upside to his style of play, but a downturn in form and performances only showed just how much further there is to go at Hotspur Way.

Playing a brand of football that has the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium rocking is one thing, but turning that into consistent Champions League football and silverware will be the ultimate long-term test.

The squad still requires change in the transfer market, with this summer providing a chance to take those next steps.

While there have been plenty of transfer rumours for Tottenham incomings, there are also exits to consider.

One of the first on the cards appears to be defender Emerson Royal, with AC Milan showing transfer interest in the Spurs star.

The reason AC Milan want Tottenham defender Emerson Royal

Emerson appears set to be the first exit of the summer for Tottenham, with the right-back readying a switch.

The 25-year-old made 22 appearances in the Premier League last season but was rarely used to his strengths.

The Brazilian defender was utilised as a centre-back and even a left-back to help deal with an injury crisis at Spurs.

With two years left on his deal and a clear preference for Pedro Porro on the right flank, an exit may suit all parties involved.

Reports have claimed that AC Milan will pay roughly £16million to Tottenham for Emerson Royal once a deal is confirmed.

While it indicates a first exit for the Lilywhites, it also ushers in a new era for the Rossoneri and their new coach.

Paulo Fonseca takes over at the San Siro from Stefano Pioli, with hopes of guiding them to more Serie A and Champions League success.

Emerson will be one of his first signings, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming that Fonseca has pushed for the deal.

His style of play insists on making the most out of energetic full-backs that can impact both ends of the pitch.

While Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao occupy the left, the right flank needs more work, which is the idea behind signing Emerson.

The outgoing Spurs defender will likely pair with former Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic on that side of the attack.

Tottenham full-back transfer problem

So with the exit of Emerson on the cards, Tottenham will face a problem that needs solving in the near future.

Their squad options beyond the first-team are thin already, with very few available players that can show the quality required.

By losing the defender, that is only adding up, with Porro and Destiny Udogie the only two guaranteed quality players at full-back.

Any injury or absence to either will immediately hamper the team, as seen toward the end of the previous campaign.

It means that, beyond the sale of Emerson, there will need to be some investment into possible options that can rotate on the flank.
