Pundit explains why Crystal Palace No.20 Adam Wharton should replace £180k-a-week player for England v Slovenia

Adam Wharton was an unused substitute for England against Denmark on Thursday night, but now there are calls for him to start.

Thursday night will have been the most intriguing game of the Euros so far for Crystal Palace supporters, with three players on the pitch from Selhurst Park.

Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen both started for their countries, with the Danish media impressed by Andersen’s performance in red.

Ebere Eze also featured, making a cameo from the bench and having an interesting moment with Andersen in the 89th minute.

But Adam Wharton was once again snubbed by Gareth Southgate, much to the confusion of Palace fans, and now Craig Dawson has explained why he should be starting.

Craig Dawson explains why Adam Wharton must start over Trent Alexander-Arnold

In the aftermath of the game, on Friday morning Sky Sports had Craig Dawson in to discuss the poor display by England, and while doing so, he’s called upon Southgate to make one change against Slovenia.

“Trent has been the scapegoat in my opinion, he’s not a midfielder. But we thought we’d have more possession, we thought we’d be playing in the opposition half a lot more than we have done in the two opening games. I don’t see him playing again on Tuesday night, really I don’t.

“I think he’ll go with Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton. I hope he goes with Adam Wharton, I’ve been a huge fan of him since he’s gone to Crystal Palace or even the job he did in the Championship with Blackburn.

“He’ll get on the ball and be positive, he’ll be playing with freedom because people will not be expecting anything from him. There’s only one cap for him, it’s remarkable what he’s done. That’d be the only change I’d make.”

Dropping the £180k-a-week right-back would be a favourable move which it seems most of the country would now agree with.

How England should line up vs Slovenia

After making a mess of the lead against Denmark, England isn’t guaranteed to go through and it’ll all come down to the final match day against Slovenia.

Winning is of the utmost importance for England considering finishing second place in the group would see them face Germany in the next round.

So with that in mind, Gareth Southgate has to make changes and there is only one change which springs to mind and that is to drop Trent for Wharton in the centre of midfield.

However, this is unlikely considering Southgate’s infatuation with Conor Gallagher despite his two poor displays in a row.
