"Caught out": Alan Pardew says Marc Guehi has one weakness which England need to watch out for this summer

Marc Guehi did Crystal Palace proud as he started England’s Euros campaign by keeping a clean sheet vs Serbia.

For Crystal Palace, the Euros and Olympics this summer are a nuisance and will do nothing more than prohibit Oliver Glasner from having his full squad available to begin the campaign.

The two tournaments will also thrust the Eagles’ best players into the limelight and potentially add to the already substantial interest in taking them away from Selhurst Park, with Marc Guehi being one of the most likely to go with lots of reports pointing to that eventuality.

Now, Guehi has been the subject of both praise and critique by Alan Pardew. Here’s what he’s said about Palace’s £65m man.

Alan Pardew talks about Marc Guehi

Speaking on TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning, former Palace boss Pardew was talking about the Eagles and touched on Guehi.

“I’ve been impressed with him all year, I don’t think that [performance vs Serbia] was an anomaly or just that one game. He’s been terrific for Palace. He got injured toward the end and I was fearing he just might not come back in time but he’s made it and it’s all good for England.

“He has this tremendous ability to read the pass. So he actually puts out the danger before it gets near the goal, that’s what his strength is.”

Despite all the praise, Pardew also highlighted a weakness Guehi has in his game.

“Sometimes it catches him out, he can get turned and caught out, we might have to watch that, but he’s got such a phenomenal pace, that he can recover.”

But he ended his speech on Guehi by stating his inclusion in the starting line-up for England is a good thing.

“He’s something our back four really needed in the centre and I’m so pleased Gareth [Southgate] picked him and now he’s had that great performance, he’s probably there for the rest of the tournament which is good news I think.”

Ben Foster praises Guehi for England performance

While Pardew had some praise, and critique for the 23-year-old defender, for Ben Foster it was just praise as he admitted that he loves what Guehi brings to the team.

“I love Guehi. I thought he did fantastic yesterday. Him and John Stones actually worked really well together, didn’t they? Really mobile, really calm, really composed.

“There were a couple of headers late on when I am thinking, yeah, decent that. Read that really well.”

The backline for England worked a treat against Serbia, despite coming under some real pressure they survived to walk out with all three points.

Guehi’s continual form through this tournament could also be excellent for Palace as he has no release clause so the club could see a bidding war commence.
