N.J. weather: Newark hits 100° as brutal heat wave continues to sizzle

New Jersey’s brutal heat wave just got even more brutal — with the temperature soaring into the triple digits at Newark Liberty Airport Friday afternoon.

That’s the word from the National Weather Service, which recorded 100 degrees in Newark at two different times, once around 2:15 p.m. and again at 3:45 p.m., according to Dominic Ramunni, a meteorologist at the agency’s New York regional office.

Although those readings are technically unofficial until they are reviewed at the end of the day, if they hold up, it would mean Newark tied its all-time highest temperature for June 21. The record was originally set in 1953.

Ramunni said Newark has a shot at hitting triple digits again on Saturday and Sunday as the intense heat wave continues. If that mark is reached, it would become the first time on record that Newark had three straight days of 100-degree temperatures during the month of June.

Newark had as many as five consecutive 100-degree days, in late July 2022.

Among the other hot spots around New Jersey on Friday have been Berkeley Township in Ocean County and Hillsborough in Somerset County, both recording temperatures as high as 98 degrees as of late Friday afternoon, according to automated temperature data from the Rutgers NJ Weather Network.

East Brunswick and Fort Dix both soared to 97 degrees.
