Newark-based Taylor Woodrow civil engineer wins prestigious award

A site manager with cerebral palsy has been named as the Civil Engineering Achiever of the Year.

This year’s Institution of Civil Engineers’ East Midlands Merit Awards, sponsored Waterman Aspen, took place on Friday, June 7.

The awards recognise teams that have delivered the best civil engineering projects across the region during the last 12 months and individuals that had made a significant contribution to the profession.

Jack Foster, Newark-based site manager at Taylor Woodrow, was named as the Civil Engineering Achiever of the Year, in the category of those with less than 10 years of experience in the profession.

Jack has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and has since become heavily involved in raising awareness of the condition and fundraising for charities including Cerebral Palsy Start, which has supported by running two marathons to date.

Jack joined Taylor Woodrow in September 2022, with four years’ experience, and was employed to work on a Department for Transport-funded Transforming Cities scheme in Derby, where he managed on-going design development as the work progressed.

Jack’s tenacity to overcome his health challenges was applauded by the judges and they recognised that he has become a role model to younger members of staff at Taylor Woodrow who are part of the trainee and apprenticeship programmes.

He also works with the recruitment teams to encourage new entrants into the industry, and attends open days, STEM days and careers events to share his experiences.

Institution of Civil Engineers’ East and West Midlands regional director, Jo Barnett, said: “Our awards this year allowed us to celebrate the many sustainable benefits that civil engineers have on our everyday lives.

“This recognition serves as a reminder of the innovation, dedication and excellence that drive the profession, shaping a better future for all.”
