'Traditional things': Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl gives verdict on VAR in the Championship

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has revealed whether or not he’d like to see VAR installed in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is currently in Germany covering Euro 2024 as a pundit for ITV.

The Owls boss has garnered widespread praise on social media for his charisma and overall insight into the football on display.

And despite being in Germany, Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday are also getting transfer deals over the line, with Yan Valery becoming Sheffield Wednesday’s third signing of the summer on Friday.

The summer ahead is shaping up to be a very positive one for Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday, who’ll be hoping for a more comfortable league finish than last season.

The Championship roster looks like another challenging one next season with Burnley, Luton Town, and Sheffield United dropping down from the Premier League.

All three teams will be returning to a Championship that is yet to install VAR, though the debate rumbles in.

Danny Rohl on whether VAR should be installed in the Championship

Rohl was a pundit for the Euro 2024 game between Poland and Austria on Friday which ended in a 3-1 win for Austria.

The game after between Netherlands and France sparked debate on social media, after Dutchman Xavi Simons had a goal ruled out by VAR.

Asked whether or not he’d like to see VAR installed in the Championship, Rohl responded: “We stay with the traditional things (in the Championship). No VAR.”

VAR was used in the Championship play-off final between Leeds United and Southampton in May, but there remains concerns about the cost of VAR installation at every Championship club.

Will the Championship ever install VAR

The Championship was the second most-attended league in Europe last season, trumping the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga, and Serie A.

It’s a hugely popular league and one that’s constantly growing in quality and stature, so inevitably, the debate around whether or not VAR should be installed will rumble on.

But many supporters will argue that not having VAR installed means that the Championship can maintain it’s traditional charm.

The Premier League is often awash with debate around referring and VAR decisions, causing constant debate around the system, which appears to still have a lot of flaws.

Many fans will agree with Rohl that the Championship should stick to its current traditional means and not install VAR anytime soon.

At least not until it becomes financially feasible for Championship clubs to do so, and when the system itself becomes much more streamlined and clear.
