Henry Winter's misplaced Jarrod Bowen praise after West Ham man misses the point about England

Jarrod Bowen spoke out about the current England situation and despite completely missing the point, Henry Winter praised him to the hilt.

England have actually been woeful out in Germany at EURO 2024 so far, aside from two 15-minute spells in both of our group games.

That said, West Ham star Jarrod Bowen has actually looked decent, and has been one of the few England players to emerge from the first week of our tournament with any credit whatsoever.

Gareth Southgate has been receiving absolute pelters for his team’s poor performances so far at the Euros, and rightly so.

Even the sycophantic media and pundits alike seem to have changed their tune on Southgate, and began ripping into the Three Lions boss in unison after the draw against Denmark.

The performances from England out in Germany have been far too slow, and have lacked any kind of urgency, movement of dynamism.

With the players Southgate has available to him, that’s just not good enough. But why has Bowen failed to realise that?

Jarrod Bowen completely misses the point about England

The Hammers star faced the media yesterday amid mounting concerns about England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

In fairness to Bowen, he spoke very well on the whole about the current state of England, highlighting how it’s not as bad as some people are making out.

Whilst there may be some truth to that, something’s definitely not right with the current setup. The buck stops with Southgate at the end of the day, and his inability to change or mix things up is really holding us back.

Bowen completely missed that point when speaking to the media, and that’s why Henry Winter’s praise of him was so misplaced in my view.

Winter took to his X account to praise Bowen after the Hammers star spoke out in an attempt to calm down fans who have been critical of England’s recent performances:

Bowen is well wide of the mark with his first sentence about England fans’ high expectations being the root cause of their frustrations out in Germany this summer.

In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Just like the West Ham fans when David Moyes was in charge at the London Stadium, the England supporters have become tired of Southgate’s dull, negative and back foot approach to games.

It’s the same old story every single time. We go 1-0 up then sit back and defend – a tactic that hardly ever works, especially when you’re shaky defensively.

Southgate has a squad of world beaters at his disposal, but sets up like he’s a League One manager trying to nick a result in the FA Cup away to a Premier League side.

Our expectations are high, of course they are. This is a seriously talented group of players we have at our disposal. However, the reason we’re all underwhelmed with the current situation and performances in general is because Southgate is such a poor manager who is failing to instil any kind of desire or energy into his players.

I love Jarrod Bowen – he’s my favourite Hammers player by a long way. He always puts in 100 per cent on the pitch and carries himself really well off of it.

He made some good points yesterday but the one he got completely wrong was regarding the source of the England fans’ frustrations.

West Ham and England ace Jarrod Bowen has missed the point in that regard, just like Henry Winter did when praising the 27-year-old’s comments.
