Report: Tottenham now leading race to sign £25m defender who’s among the best passers in Europe

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ‘in pole position’ to sign a defender who ranks among the best passers in Europe.

Spurs look set to be on the lookout for fresh options at full-back as Emerson Royal is likely to head out the door this summer.

Royal is receiving interest from Serie A giants AC Milan, as well as Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

The Brazilian managed just 11 starts in the Premier League last season but proved to be a useful option for Ange Postecoglou due to his versatility.

Now, according to The Mirror, Spurs are in a commanding position in their attempts to snap up another versatile option for Postecoglou.

Tottenham ‘in pole position’ to sign Lutsharel Geertruida

The Mirror reports that Tottenham have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

It’s claimed that Liverpool boss Arne Slot is reluctant to make his former defender the first signing of his tenure at Anfield.

This is apparently down to the criticism Erik ten Hag has received at Manchester United for signing Eredivisie players.

As a result, Spurs are now leading the chase for the Dutchman, despite interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Geertruida is said to be huge admirer of the Premier League and regularly watches his compatriots in England’s top tier.

Geertruida among the best passers in Europe

On paper, Geertruida would be an astute signing for Spurs and seems to fit Postecoglou’s demands perfectly.

The £25 million-rated defender is able to play at centre-back, as well as right-back and has even operated in midfield.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a versatile option in defence and Geertruida would certainly tick plenty of boxes.

The 23-year-old also ranks among the best passers in Europe in his position, with FBref ranking him in the top on per cent for progressive passes and pass completion last season.

Given the fact that Royal doesn’t seem suited to Postecoglou’s demands, Geertruida’s ability on the ball would make him a significant upgrade on the Spurs star.
