Report: £60,000-a-week Liverpool player now close to finalising exit after rejecting new contract

Arne Slot is now set to wave goodbye to one of his players at Liverpool – after they rejected the offer of a new contract.

It was announced at the end of last season that both Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara would leave Anfield when their respective contracts expire on June 30th, following an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign for the pair.

Another Liverpool player is also set to see his contract expire within a week, although those in the boardroom at Anfield actually want him to stay.

However, a departure is now imminent after the offer of a new contract was rejected…

Adrian set for Liverpool exit

A story from ABC Sevilla now claims that Adrian is finalising a move to Real Betis after rejecting the chance to stay at Liverpool.

The Spanish news outlet believe Liverpool offered the man from Sevilla a 12-month extension on his current £60,000-a-week contract, but he has opted to decline the deal in favour of returning to his homeland.

Adrian did not make a single appearance for the Reds last season as Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher were preferred by Jurgen Klopp – the Spaniard was not even named on the bench in 33 of Liverpool’s games throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Despite that lack of playing time, ABC Sevilla mention that Liverpool wanted to keep the 37-year-old on board for the 2024/25 campaign due to his vast experience.

The Liverpool No.13 has only made 26 appearances since joining on a free transfer back in August 2019 – keeping seven clean sheets and conceding a total of 36 goals.

Arne Slot may be left short of goalkeeping options

As aforesaid, Adrian hardly played last season, so his absence will not be a huge loss to Liverpool.

However, the Reds might be left worryingly short of goalkeeping options next season unless a new face is signed, as there are also doubts over Kelleher’s future at Anfield.

The Republic of Ireland international wants to become No.1 elsewhere – according to The Athletic – and while Liverpool would ideally like to keep him, they would consider bids in the region of £25m in respect of the glovesman’s wishes.

Celtic are said to believe they have a good chance of signing Kelleher, so Glasgow is one potential destination for the Liverpool No.62 this summer.
