'He gets a say': What Enzo Maresca has been doing at Cobham - journalist

Enzo Maresca does not officially start work at Chelsea until July 1.

However, it looks like the Italian has already got down to business as the new Chelsea boss.

Enzo Maresca succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as Blues manager earlier this month after the Argentine’s decision to leave Stamford Bridge by mutual consent.

The 44-year-old will not have an easy start to life in west London.

Enzo Maresca giving his input

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are responsible for recruitment at the club.

However, according to journalist Simon Phillips, Maresca will have a say and he has actually been at Cobham discussing the above with Stewart and Winstanley.

On his Substack, Phillips said: “Maresca has been back at Cobham having recruitment discussions with the sporting directors and giving his views on some of the names we are looking at.

“Remember, he gets a say, but does not have the final sign off, and it will be the sporting directors and Behdad Eghbali who make the final decisions.”

Who could Enzo Maresca tell Chelsea to sign?

It has been claimed that Chelsea are pushing to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams after missing out on Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise.

Perhaps, then, the 21-year-old is one player who Maresca would not mind seeing arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Based on how Williams played last season, he could be a very good addition to Maresca’s squad.

In 31 La Liga appearances, the Spain international scored five goals and provided 11 assists, so he had quite a productive campaign.

Chelsea are also being linked with a move for Lille’s Jonathan David. It has been reported that they have held talks with the player’s representatives.

With the Blues finishing last season with Nicolas Jackson as the only natural striker in their squad, perhaps Maresca has also suggested that they look at David or told the club he would be on board with any move for him.
