Aston Villa make contact with Real Sociedad over transfer target Brais Mendez

With Douglas Luiz set to depart to Juventus, Emery will hope to fulfil the creativity lost in the Brazilian this summer.

One player who could certainly offer such relief is rumoured target Brais Mendez, whom Villa have reportedly ‘asked about’.

A report via The Express claims that Emery has enquired about the attacking midfielder’s availability, as he hopes to make a move for the Real Sociedad star.

The report explains the power of Emery’s track record in acquiring LaLiga talent, saying that the Villa boss ‘could look to exercise’ his pull along with Villa’s Champions League status.

The Midlands club aren’t alone in their admiration for Mendez, being described as the ‘latest club to make contact’, with Manchester United, Roma and Juventus also mentioned.

Ahead of the January transfer window, The Express also noted Tottenham’s previous interest, citing a £52m valuation of the 27-year-old LaLiga ace.

Mendez could be a strong signing for Villa

The Villa target is statistically comparable to Villa captain John McGinn, as well as Premier League star Kai Havertz and fellow rumoured Villa target Alex Baena, as per FBref.

Best deployed in central attacking midfield, Mendez has also been utilised on the right side of midfield, suggesting his versatility in attack.

Once lauded as a ‘smooth operator’ for his presence in midfield by journalist Zach Lowy, the Spaniard could offer a significant goalscoring threat in the central areas at Villa Park.

The 27-year-old contributed to 17 goals in LaLiga last season, scoring eight and assisting nine when acting as one of Sociedad’s best performers over the campaign.

Given the void that Villa need to fill, capturing Mendez could be a stroke of genius by Monchi, with the player showcasing that he has the attacking threat that the Villans must replenish when Luiz departs.
