Unai Emery warned of ‘unnecessary’ Aston Villa transfer decision as major ‘concern’ now emerges

Unai Emery has been warned that he is making a big mistake at Aston Villa this summer in the transfer window.

Aston Villa, like many other clubs, are eager to get business done quickly this summer, as the Villans bid to address their PSR concerns.

As a result of financial woes, Unai Emery is poised to part ways with Douglas Luiz, who looks set to join Juventus as part of a swap deal.

Despite numerous reports, Weston McKennie will not be joining Samuel Iling-Junior as part of the transfer, with Enzo Barrenechea taking his place in the transaction.

While Emery will acquire two encouraging young talents, the Villa boss has been warned that he and Monchi are about to make a huge mistake.

Villa’s need to generate profit and lower the wage bill has led to the conclusion of cutting ties with Luiz, which will create a significant void for the Spaniard to fill.

Speaking exclusively to Aston Villa News, HITC journalist Graeme Bailey warned that the Midlands club are taking a ‘backwards step’ by trading Luiz in a swap deal with Juventus.

“I think it’s a massive backwards step, I’m shocked by it, if that’s what Unai Emery wants who is anyone to suggest otherwise?

“I think Luiz stands out as the star figure [in Villa’s midfield], Luiz offers something different in that holding role.”

Bailey continued by sharing his belief that the decision to offload Luiz will weaken Emery’s starting lineup ahead of Villa’s crucial Champions League campaign in 2024/25.

“I struggle to understand Villa’s thinking but Monchi and Emery clearly have their own ideas. I think it weakens the starting XI, which I think is a concern.”

With the deal understood to be green-lighted, Luiz desires to join Juventus, seeing his Villa career come to an end after five eventful years.

Villa fans must trust Emery and Monchi in Douglas Luiz transfer

It will be agonising for Villa to lose Luiz however, fans will trust Monchi and Emery given that the duo have not given anyone a reason to doubt their judgement.

Bailey reinforced such opinion, however, also shared his concerns about the swap deal representing a downgrade in the squad.

“I am told that Barrenechea is a very talented player, but is he clearly seen as a project more than ready to play in the Premier League given he has just spent the year on loan.

“He is a holding midfielder so makes sense in that regard, but still for me it is an unnecessary downgrade to the starting XI – but Villa fans have to trust in Emery and Monchi, they know what they are doing.”

Considering what Luiz offers to Emery’s side, it will be fascinating to see just how the Spaniard alters his starting XI next term to cover the Brazilian’s absence.
