Body of missing N.J. man pulled from Lake Hopatcong, officials say

The body of a 79-year-old man who went missing after entering Lake Hopatcong in Roxbury on Saturday evening was recovered Monday morning, authorities said.

William Ryan was found Monday near the southern tip of the lake after an extensive search that started after he went in the water alone at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday and didn’t return, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday. The death of Ryan, of the Landing section of Roxbury, is not considered suspicious.

A search for the Ryan was launched Saturday night before being suspended overnight. It resumed Sunday but water conditions and poor visibility made it hard to find him and officials halted the search again Sunday night.

State Police deployed divers and a helicopter while the Morris County Sheriff’s Office used a submersible vessel as well.

The North Jersey Regional Scuba Task Force, the Parsippany Rescue & Recovery Unit and the Roxbury Fire Department were among the other agencies who assisted in the search, officials said.
