Hit-and-run driver lied to cops when he got caught, police say

A man lied to police when he claimed that a car registered to him that was involved in an crash in Atlantic County was stolen, authorities said.

On Aug. 27, 2023, the 50-year-old Egg Harbor Township man was told by officers that the car was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Absecon, according to a statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

He told police that the car must have been stolen from his property and also filed an insurance claim stating the same, investigators said.

It was later discovered that he was driving the car at the time of the crash, so he was charged on June 14 with three counts of third-degree insurance fraud and one count of third-degree giving false reports to law enforcement, the office announced Thursday.

He was processed and released on a summons, officials said.
