N.J. police officer who was about to retire just underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor

A Summit police sergeant has been left partially blind and partial paralysis of the left side of his body as a result of complications following a surgery to remove a noncancerous brain tumor.

Brian Werthmann, who has served in the Summit police department for over 24 years, underwent an eight hour surgery to remove the 4 centimeter tumor on May 31, according to aGoFundMe established by the Summit PBA.

Werthmann was set to retire from law enforcement on Aug. 1 and begin working as a general contractor with his new company, Werthmann Bros. Due to the complications, he will not be able to work as a general contractor for some time, according to Summit PBA Local 55.

“We are deeply grateful for the continuing generosity from the community,” said Adam Uanis, police officer and Summit PBA delegate. “Sergeant Werthmann has always been there for us, and now it is our turn to be there for him.”

As of Monday, nearly $66,000 of the $100,000 fundraising goal had been reached. The funds will go directly to the Werthmann Family, according to the Summit PBA.
