Now that the Euros is over for Scotland, the Celtic fans can focus on domestic matters and how Brendan Rodgers plans to strengthen the team for next season.
Transfer chat has been going on for a few weeks now and despite no new faces being added to the team, the Celtic fans seem calm as we head into the height of the summer.
However, it seems that the Celtic chat is extending onto the Scotland national team now that serious questions are being raised about Steve Clarke‘s side’s performance in the tournament.
For the second Euros in a row, Scotland went out with a whimper with just one point collected from nine. And it seems that the media talk is now whether or not Clarke can take the team forward.
Richard Keys reckons his time is up and he has put forward a Celtic legend as a name he believes can get more out of the current Scotland squad.
Paul Lambert tipped as next Scotland manager
Paul Lambert has had a fairly successful career as a manager and Keys believes the Celtic legend could do a job for Scotland now.
Keys said [Richard AJ Keys], “I can’t imagine that Clarke keeps his job now. In the round – he’s done really well for Scotland, but it’s time for a change.
“Who? Well, not Souness, who’s been busier than ever since Sky sacked him and tried to sell the lie that he was retiring. I love Graeme, but I think he’s beyond a return to management now.
“I’ve seen Coisty’s name mentioned as well. Yea. I get that. He’d be a breath of fresh air, but I think he’s probably too comfortable working in the media now. He’s also too good to be allowed to change course.
“My choice would be Paul Lambert.
“He’s hugely experienced and enormously well respected on the European football scene. He’s the right age and deeply patriotic. Why not?”
Lambert has managed the likes of Norwich City, Wolves, Ipswich and Aston Villa. With The Canaries, he took them to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions from League One in a season where he was named The 2011 Championship Manager of the Year.
Such was Lambert’s success in the lower leagues in England, he managed to take lowly Wycombe Wanderers to the FA Cup semi-final in 2006.
With Aston Villa, Lambert took them to the League Cup semi-final in 2014 where he was tipped as a contender for the Premier League manager of the year.
However, since he was sacked by Ipswich in 2021 after leaving them sitting in eighth position in League One, the former Celtic hero has been out of the game since.
Could Lambert be the man to take Scotland forward after Clarke? It seems like a bit of a long shot to me to be honest.
But it does seem like a change could be coming as the disappointment of the Euros exit still lingers with the fans.
