Report: Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants ‘brilliant’ former Celtic backroom man at Besiktas

Getting away from the talk of Euro 2024 for a minute as some Celtic-related business comes back into focus this morning.

The tournament in Germany has ended for the Celtic quartet of Callum McGregor, Anthony Ralston, James Forrest and Greg Taylor.

Whilst only McGregor and Ralston were utilised by Steve Clarke, all four can now look forward to a break from football and training so they can recharge their batteries before pre-season kicks in in July.

However, as we look forward to the new season ahead, a former key Celtic backroom man could possibly be looking forward to a new season in Turkey.

Anton McElhone wanted by Besiktas

Now at Queens Park as Head of Youth Development, a report in the Daily Record has claimed that Besiktas boss, Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to add McElhone to his backroom staff in a first-team role.

Anton McElhone was hired by Celtic as Head of Sports Science in 2021 at the beginning of the Ange Postecoglou era.

Speaking at the time of the appointment, Ange said [Anton McElhone’s LinkedIn], “We brought in Anton as the Head of Sports Science and he has been brilliant since he came into Celtic FC, not just in terms of what he was able to input but also in helping the existing staff.

“It was not about me replacing people and it was certainly not about me bringing in people I had worked with in the past, I have always tried to bring in the best people possible, irrespective of their backgrounds or whether I had worked with them or not.”

The former Rangers boss was hired by the Turkish club last month and clearly sees McElhone’s 20-year experience of working at clubs like Celtic, Spurs, Hibs and Queens Park as crucial in helping him reclaim the Turkish championship that they last won in 2021.
