New claim from Mexico on Edson Alvarez hamstring injury could be terrible news for West Ham

Edson Alvarez suffered a nasty looking hamstring injury whilst playing for Mexico in the Copa America over the weekend.

West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez firmly established himself as a vital player for us last season – one of the most important at the London Stadium in fact.

So with that in mind, it was hugely concerning when he suffered a hamstring injury out in America in the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time.

However, it was then claimed by Fabrizio Romano that the hamstring problem wasn’t as bad as first feared.

That said, Julen Lopetegui is still said to be prioritising the addition of a new defensive midfielder to provide cover for the 26-year-old former Ajax man.

That tells it’s own story really doesn’t it.

Now, a new update has emerged on Alvarez in his home country, and I think it’s something to be really concerned about…

Edson Alvarez injury twist

Lopetegui will surely be keen to build his team around the Mexico international next season and beyond.

His ability to receive the ball in tight spaces and composure when in possession will be key to Lopetegui’s setup.

In 31 Premier League games for the Hammers last season, the 26-year-old midfield warrior averaged 2.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 2.3 clearances. He made 38.5 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 86.1% (Who Scored).

So what’s the latest update on the tenacious tackling midfielder?

According to Record out in Mexico, Alvarez left the team training camp without the use of crutches – the first time he’s been pictured without them in two days.

That has led to suggestions that he could actually make a miraculous recovery and return to play for Mexico in the Copa America.

Now, I think that’s actually bad news. Even the slightest of hamstring strains require around a three-week recovery time.

So if he does return to play for his country, he undoubtedly would have been rushed back to action.

I’m hoping that we don’t see Edson Alvarez in a Mexico shirt again this summer, after his hamstring injury.

Obviously that’s purely from a selfish perspective, but West Ham is my only concern in this scenario.
