Newcastle United could pull off transfer masterclass if they get their Yankuba Minteh wish - opinion

Newcastle United are taking a risk with Yankuba Minteh, but it is a risk they need to take.

The Magpies are under pressure to sell someone before June 30th due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, and it looks like Yankuba Minteh is the player who will depart.

While Newcastle could also lose Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson this summer, they are not going to be sold before Sunday. In contrast, Minteh has plenty of clubs chasing his signature – one of which he has already agreed personal terms with.

Even though a move to Everton has now collapsed, there are various teams across Europe eyeing up the 19-year-old. Selling him will solve Newcastle’s PSR problem – especially if they can get a fee near their £40million asking price.

That will be tough, and the fact that Newcastle value him so highly might suggest to some that they are making a mistake. They are willingly selling a teenager with a huge amount of potential, which is a decision that could come back to haunt them.

Two clauses Newcastle United are considering ahead of Yankuba Minteh sale

That is why Newcastle are reportedly looking to cover their backs as they negotiate Minteh’s exit from St James’ Park.

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle want a deal for Minteh to include a future sell-on clause and possibly even a buy back option.

They add that the Magpies would prefer to sell the winger to a club outside of the Premier League. That makes sense, as from a fan perspective it would be more palatable to see him thrive away from England rather than for a rival.

Newcastle thinking ahead as they prepare to sell Minteh

While it is a surprise to see that Newcastle are planning to sell Minteh, it is a case of needs must. Someone needs to go this week, and it looks like it will be him. That is largely because he has suitors, which is a testament to his ability.

Selling Minteh is going to massively help Newcastle financially, and it is a deal that could end up having a long-term impact at St James’ Park.

It is vital that any deal includes a sell-on clause, especially if the Magpies think he can go for even more money in the future. That will ensure that Newcastle get a slice of any future fee that someone pays for Minteh, just like Chelsea did when we bought Tino Livramento or like Manchester City will if we complete a deal for James Trafford.

It is common practice when you are selling a young player like Minteh, and it would be even better if a deal includes a buy back clause. That could really allow Newcastle to rectify their mistake, if that is what it turns out to be.
