Chelsea need to make 'world-class' player their top target after club reportedly slash price tag - opinion

Chelsea could have a great opportunity to fix one of their biggest problems.

The Blues have already addressed their defence by bringing in Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham.

The 26-year-old can plug the hole, or at least try to, that Thiago Silva has left with his exit.

However, they still need to sign a new striker, and one elite No.9 now looks more than attainable for a club of their wealth.

Chelsea yet to sign Nicolas Jackson alternative

Chelsea need to bring in another striker because they relied too heavily on Nicolas Jackson last season.

He was their main centre-forward and played almost 50 games under Mauricio Pochettino.

They asked a lot of the Senegal international, who was only 22 at the time.

Chelsea are trying to fix that by signing a new striker but are struggling to land one. It has been claimed that they have now cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion, partly because he does not want to join the club.

If the Blues end up with someone like Napoli’s Victor Osimhen instead, though, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Chelsea should make a bid for Victor Osimhen

Signing Osimhen does not sound easy either.

The 25-year-old has a huge release clause that seems to be putting off suitors.

However, according to Calciomercato, Napoli are now willing to consider bids of €100m (£84.4m) for their talisman rather than demand for his full €150m (£126.7m) release clause to be paid.

At that price, Osimhen could be affordable for Chelsea. And if the Nigerian is, then he really needs to be their priority for the rest of the transfer window.

Osimhen, hailed as a “world-class” No.9 by AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun, is a proven goalscorer.

He netted 17 times in Italy last season and on 31 occasions the campaign before. Osimhen should bring goals to Stamford Bridge and should be Chelsea’s main target for the No.9 position if Napoli really have lowered his price tag.
