National Argentine media give their thoughts on Enzo Fernandez’s first start for Argentina at Copa America

Some of Chelsea’s top players are taking part this summer in the Copa America, with one of them making their first start of the competition last night.

Enzo Fernandez was a key player in Argentina’s World Cup run back in 2021, with him getting a move to Stamford Bridge off the back of it.

However, his Copa America saw him start on the bench, with him still getting back to full fitness off the back of the injury that forced him into surgery in the final weeks of the domestic season.

It will feel to some Chelsea fans that the midfielder has at times saved his best performances for his country, with them believing they could well see more from him for the club.

Last night was probably not his best display for his nation though, with TyC Sports only handing him a 6/10, the joint lowest rating given to any Argentina player.

Argentine media hand Enzo Fernandez a 6/10

They said: “His position was as an inside midfielder but stepping into the area often. He played an hour that helped him regain his rhythm of play. He complied.”

He faces a lot of competition for his place in the heart of the Argentina side, who have already booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition after winning their first two games.

A player who has not enjoyed the same luck in the competition so far is Moises Caicedo, starting for Ecuador alongside future club teammate Kendry Paez.

They were defeated in their opening group game after seeing their captain sent off in the first half, and now face an uphill battle to book their place in the knockout stage.

In the European Championships, Cole Palmer was finally given his first appearance of the competition for his country in England’s third group game last night against Slovenia.
