Wolves must move to secure bargain signing after transfer update on 'dangerous' Euro 2024 star - opinion

Gary O’Neil is on the hunt for a striker in the summer transfer window, with one player’s future now something that should alert the Wolves manager.

It’s been a fast start to the summer transfer window at Molineux, with plenty of work yet to be done before the 2024/25 campaign.

Tommy Doyle, Rodrigo Gomes and soon-to-be Pedro Lima represent Wolves’ early business of the window, with both arrivals and departures still expected to come.

After his hard work during 2023/24, Gary O’Neil has made his desire to sign a striker known to Fosun, a wish he could see granted if the Old Gold were to monitor one player.

Wolves should eye Breel Embolo after recent transfer update

From Che Adams to Eddie Nketiah, Wolves have been linked with several possible striker targets this summer.

As O’Neil continues his search, the Wolves boss could strike gold if he were to consider the transfer situation of one European striker this summer.

As reported by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Switzerland talisman Breel Embolo could be on the move ahead of next season.

The Monaco striker is contracted to the Ligue 1 side until 2026 however, Plettenberg reported that his agents are ‘sounding out the market’.

It’s relayed that Embolo is valued up to €20m (£17m), something that should alert Wolves on their quest to sign a new number nine.

Though Wolves haven’t been mentioned as having an interest in the Swiss forward, O’Neil should consider a swoop for the striker who is currently at Euro 2024.

What Embolo could offer to Gary O’Neil’s side

After a harrowing 2023/24 campaign that saw Embolo earn only five appearances for Monaco, the 27-year-old is thriving at the Euros.

In August 2023, the striker suffered a serious ACL injury in training, which saw him out of action until the final games of the season.

It was a dire shame for Embolo and Monaco, who were impressed by the forward’s first campaign in their colours in 2022/23, where he contributed to 18 goals.

Once lauded by scout Antonio Mango as being a player who ‘can be so dangerous’ when on the pitch, O’Neil could discover the target man that Wolves have been yearning for since Raul Jimenez.

The Switzerland international has strengths in both finishing and playmaking, with his power on the ball one of the elements that makes him such an attractive profile.

In the 2022/23 season, the Monaco forward averaged a higher shots-to-goals ratio per 90 than Kylian Mbappe, via FBref, reinforcing what he can bring to the front line.

Being a player who hunts chances and is efficient in front of goal, Wolves would undoubtedly benefit from acquiring a striker with Embolo’s potency.
