'Most underrated': Journalist says nobody realises just how good ‘incredible’ Wolves ace could become

After the highs and lows of the 2023/24 season, Gary O’Neil has now been informed of who Wolves’ most underrated player is.

Last season was a trialling one for Wolves, who suffered through the gruelling summer of 2023 before earning a 14th-place finish.

Gary O’Neil was appointed just days before the start of the campaign, taking over when the Old Gold’s squad had been depleted due to a mass exile to raise funds.

Finishing 14th was a relief for the Midlands club who feared relegation after the summer’s lows, with many players improving thanks to O’Neil’s guidance.

Several stars had their best seasons at the club as a result of the manager’s tactical approach, with one player signed by Nuno Santo, now dubbed the most underrated.

Wolves expert Nathan Judah thinks Toti Gomes is Gary O’Neil’s most underrated talent

Speaking via Express and Star when assessing Wolves’ defenders in 2023/24, journalist Nathan Judah shed some light on his opinion of Toti Gomes.

The Wolves expert concluded that he sees the Portuguese defender as ‘one of the most underrated’ talents in O’Neil’s squad, admitting that he is excited for his future.

“I think Toti Gomes is probably one of the most underrated players in the squad and in the team, not only in terms of defensive prowess but physicality.

“The ability to run with the ball which is understated at times, and he’s got an eye for goal.

“For me he’s one of the players I’m really excited about to see his development over the next three to four years.”

O’Neil must continue to nurture Toti at Wolves

Even in 2022/23, Toti wasn’t considered a player of significant value to Wolves, as he gathered only 10 starts throughout the entire Premier League campaign.

Under O’Neil, the start of last term seemed to be the same however, when the boss switched to a back three, Toti prevailed as the perfect man for the manager’s defence.

The defender was hailed as ‘incredible’ by O’Neil last season, as he thrived on the left side of the back three, combining well to become integral to how Wolves built play from the back.

Still only 25 years old, the stature of Toti at Molineux must only grow in the years to come, with his profile being perfect to how O’Neil desires his side to play.

In February, the Portuguese defender was handed a contract extension in the Midlands, reinforcing just how important he is considered to the squad.
