Forget United: One 24/25 fixture will truly showcase Rohl's turnaround at Sheffield Wednesday - opinion

Danny Rohl may have his eye on one particular game at Sheffield Wednesday next season, aside from the Steel City derby.

Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United are both competing in the Championship in the 2024/25 season.

The Steel City derby returns for the first time since 2019 with the Owls heading to Bramall Lane on November 9th, and the Blades heading to Hillsborough on March 15th.

Fans of both clubs will have the dates locked in, with both sets of fans potentially viewing their clubs as promotion contenders next season.

The Blades will inevitably be backed to succeed next season following their relegation from the Premier League last time round.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday could be fancied as dark horses under Danny Rohl, following his impressive turnaround in the Championship last season.

The final games of the campaign will be all-important for both sets of fans, though Rohl may have a particular eye on the very last game of the season; a trip to Watford.

Why will Watford away be important for Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday

The final game of the season may be an important one for Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday for many reasons.

It could quite easily become a game that decides their fate next season, given the fact that it’s the final game of the campaign.

But for Rohl, it’ll be something of a sentimental one, with a trip to Watford being his first ever game in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.

Following his October appointment, Rohl took his Sheffield Wednesday side to Vicarage Road on October 21st, losing 1-0.

Although it ended in defeat, it was clear the philosophy that Rohl wanted to adopt. And the game marked the start of what’s become a very memorable and excitable tenure for the German.

Can Sheffield Wednesday realistically challenge for promotion in 2024/25

After seeing how well Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday did in the second half of last season, it’s hard not to get carried away with thoughts for next season.

The form game of the last 25 games of the season had the Owls in 8th. So if Rohl can bolster his squad this summer and spend some more money on new players after Yan Valery, which is expected, then there’s no reason to believe that the Owls can’t be challenging for top six.

That Watford game could well be one that sees the Owls claim a spot in the top six next season, and if that’s the case then it’ll mark a huge improvement from when Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday last went to Vicarage Road.

560 days stand between that first trip to Watford and next season’s final game, which takes place on May 3rd 2025.

It’ll certainly be interesting to compare where Sheffield Wednesday are then, compared to when Rohl took charge.
