‘The best of the lot’: Gary Lineker reckons player Man City sold in 2023 is an absolute star

Manchester City have cashed in on numerous players over previous transfer windows.

Despite selling players such as Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, to name a few, in recent years, Pep Guardiola’s side have still managed to be a dominant force in English football.

Specifically, their previous campaign saw them become the first side to win four Premier League trophies in a row.

However, one pundit has suggested that another figure City have sold in recent memory has catapulted himself to a very high status among other players in his age range.

Gary Lineker says Cole Palmer is the best young talent in England

While looking back over England’s recent 0-0 draw with Slovenia in a recent episode of The Rest Is Football, Lineker had this to say on the subject of Cole Palmer and his cameo appearance in the match.

He said: “Now, I think there were downsides, but I think there were real positives, particularly I thought when Cole Palmer came on.

“And we’ve said this many times, I think, and we know we’ve got a lot of talented young players, but this kid, he might well be the best of the lot. I don’t know.

“We shall see. Don’t want to put too much pressure on him. But I don’t think he cares about pressure.”

Palmer has flourished since leaving City

After making 41 senior appearances for City, whose youth ranks he worked his way out of, scoring six goals and delivering two assists in the process, he joined Chelsea last summer in a deal worth £42m.

In his debut season at the West London club, the winger, who Nedum Onuoha said back in May he was sad to see leave City, found the back of the net 25 times and supplied 15 assists in 45 games across all competitions.

This led to him being selected in England’s squad for the Euros, where he made his first appearance of the tournament in the 0-0 draw against Slovenia.

During the 19 minutes of action he got on Tuesday night, Palmer had one shot on target, completed all 12 passes he attempted but was unable to successfully complete any of the three dribbles he went on.

Having had such a sparkling debut season at Chelsea and a bright cameo for England against Slovenia, it shouldn’t surprise any City or Chelsea fans that Lineker thinks so highly of Palmer.
