Alex Crook claims West Ham are now in for £40 million Premier League attacker

West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui is apparently eyeing a really big summer transfer it seems.

Julen Lopetegui has been a busy man in the summer transfer window already, bringing Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham to West Ham.

A lot more work needs to be done though, with six exciting new signings reportedly on Lopetegui’s radar.

The main priorities for the Hammers boss will be to sign a top-class centre-forward and a high quality centre-back before the start of the new season.

I would suggest that a new striker should be right at the top of Lopetegui’s agenda though.

West Ham simply cannot head into the 2024/25 campaign with Michail Antonio as his main striker.

And the 34-year-old is being linked with an exit anyway.

The good news is that Lopetegui apparently has a proven Premier League striker lined up to come to the London Stadium this summer.

The bad news is that he’s very injury prone and has been in poor form over the past two seasons…

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui now in for £40 million PL attacker

Lopetegui has already been linked with numerous strikers this summer, including the likes of Youssef En-Nesyri and Simon Banza, whilst Tammy Abraham is believed to be a target as well.

However, the Spaniard may well be looking slightly closer to home now…

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the Hammers are ‘lurking’ for Everton hitman Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Toffees are said to be demanding around £40 million for the 26-year-old, and this is a deal I think West Ham should avoid at all costs.

On his day, he’s a very good striker, but those days have been very few and far between of late.

He bagged just eight goals in 38 outings last term, and only two in 18 the season before that.

And what about his horrendous injury record? Calvert-Lewin has missed a shocking 410 days of action for Everton through injury since the start of the 2021/22 season.

He’s just not reliable enough, and can in no way guarantee playing even 30 games a season.

There are plenty of better, more durable strikers out there. Give me En-Nesyri over Calvert-Lewin all day long.

Whether West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui agrees with that notion remains to be seen though.
