Woman seriously hurt when tree crashes through N.J. home during storms

A woman was seriously injured Wednesday night after a tree crashed through a Park Ridge home as a ferocious storm rolled through North Jersey, police said.

The tree went through the Park Avenue home on the east side of town around 8:30 p.m. and the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, Park Ridge Police Capt. Joseph Rampolla told NJ Advance Media.

Rampolla said he did not know the woman’s condition or the full extent of her injuries as of 10:30 p.m.

Multiple trees were down throughout Park Ridge and Rampolla estimated that about half the borough was without power.

“We have crews out assessing the damage,” he said.

There were numerous reports of trees and wires down throughout Bergen and Essex counties on Wednesday evening. As of 10:40 p.m., nearly 108,000 customers were without power in New Jersey.

Forecasters said a strong cold front interacting with hot and humid air triggered a line of storms with heavy downpours, large hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph, which were strong enough to topple trees and power lines.
