Report: Released Sheffield Wednesday man now a target for overseas team after tough spell in S6

Sheffield Wednesday released Juan Delgado at the end of last season, after just one year in S6.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Juan Delgado, 31, on a free transfer last summer, reuniting with former Owls boss Xisco Munoz.

Munoz had previously managed Delgado at Spanish outfit Gimnastic in 2016 and the Chilean was available on a free transfer after being let go by Portuguese outfit Pacos Ferreira.

But the 15-capped Chilean international would feature just 10 times in the Championship last season, after undergoing hip surgery which ruled him out from October.

Delgado never featured under Danny Rohl. He was pictured in first-team training towards the end of the campaign but never featured in a matchday squad following his injury.

Despite only signing for the Owls last summer, Delgado was released at the end of last season, per the club’s retained list.

Now though, it appears that Delgado may be about to join a new club.

Coquimbo Unidos target Juan Delgado after Sheffield Wednesday release

Chilean outfit Coquimbo Unidos are reportedly keeping tabs on Delgado as they eye additions on the flanks.

An emerging report from Chilean outlet Mi Radio says that Delgado is among a list of options to potentially replace midfielder Luciano Cabral this summer.

Delgado began his career in his native Chile, coming through the ranks at Colo-Colo and going on to make 85 total appearances for the 33-time Chilean champions.

Coquimbo Unidos currently sit in 2nd place of the Chilean Primera Division and their transfer window is currently open for business.

Should Sheffield Wednesday have kept Juan Delgado for another season

Delgado’s season with Sheffield Wednesday was very unfortunate, and he may rue never getting the chance to properly showcase his abilities on English soil.

Under Munoz, it was obviously difficult for the whole team, and Delgado never really showed much promise.

But like many others, he could’ve prevailed under Rohl, and Delgado’s technical ability and versatility down the right could’ve made him a very useful player in the second half of the season.

Many fans would’ve liked to see Delgado given a chance to prove his worth under Rohl. But it appears that his injury kept him out of contention to ever earn an extended deal.

A return to Chile where he’s obviously well-known from his time with the national team could be a good next step for Delgado.

And joining a club in title contention this summer could get Delgado’s career right back on track after a tough last year.
