Report: Sheffield Wednesday chances of signing 'fantastic' 11-goal star now rated amid 'fierce competition'

Ike Ugbo’s future is yet to be decided after leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the season.

The striker joined Troyes in 2022 but managed only seven goals across two seasons before he was sent out on loan to Cardiff City.

Ugbo has now spent the last year in Wales and England, netting four goals in 20 games for the Bluebirds before moving to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Canadian enjoyed a ‘fantastic’ second half of the campaign, scoring seven times and helping the Owls avoid relegation.

Wednesday have made it clear for some time that they would like to bring Ugbo back to Hillsborough, but his impressive form has earned him plenty of interest elsewhere.

Sheffield Wednesday told there is still the possibility of signing Ike Ugbo

Danny Rohl’s side have been told they will face ‘fierce competition’ for the attacker, while a deal could be tricky due to his price tag too.

It is unclear how much Troyes will demand for him, but it is likely to be way above his reported £2.4 million market value.

Wednesday have previously been told they could struggle to land Ugbo again, while it appears they have already started to look at alternatives.

The Championship club have already been linked with another ex-Cardiff player in Sory Kaba, while they have reignited their interest in Arsenal’s Mika Biereth too.

However, it now looks like a return for Ugbo isn’t completely off the table.

According to The Athletic, it’s a ‘safe bet’ that the 25-year-old could end up in the Championship again, while a move to Wednesday ‘isn’t unlikely’.

Ugbo’s return would be a massive boost to Wednesday, who are really lacking in goals in his absence.

The Owls should still consider cheaper options

The Owls arguably won’t have stayed up without his impact in the final months of the season and he could be a brilliant addition to push further forward next term.

However, Rohl certainly shouldn’t close off other options that could be more beneficial.

While a very good striker, Ugbo could still cost a lot and there could be cheaper alternatives who will still guarantee goals.

Biereth netted 15 goals and provided nine assists last term – a very exciting return for a player arguably above the Championship level.

While competition would be fierce there too, the forward could be another very solid option for them.
